Hayley
Westenra Sings at tribute service
Hayley
Westenra, New Zealand’s brightest young singing star and National
Ambassador for UNICEF New Zealand, joined other celebrities
and dignitaries to celebrate the life of Sir Peter Ustinov
at a tribute service at the United Nations General Assembly
building in New York, which was held Monday 7th June at 5:30pm
(EST).
Hayley
was included in this high-profile event, at which over 100
countries were represented, through the efforts of the UNICEF
NZ office. Hayley had the opportunity to meet Kofi Annan,
Secretary General of the UN, at a reception following the
memorial.
The
30-minute service, entitled "Peter the Great: A Celebration
of the Life of Sir Peter Ustinov", featured readings
and testimonials from Kofi Annan, Carol Bellamy, UNICEF Executive
Director, actress Mia Farrow and singer Harry Belafonte –
both UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors - Sir Emyr Jones Parry, British
Ambassador to the UN and Lebohang K. Moleko, Mosotho Ambassador
to the UN, as well as musical performances from Hayley Westenra,
Judy Collins and Elisabeth Woo.
Hayley
performed the traditional Maori song "Pokarekare Ana",
from her debut international album "Pure". At only
17 years old, Hayley is the youngest person to ever be selected
for the prestigious role of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, while
Sir Peter Ustinov was UNICEF’s oldest and longest-serving
Ambassador.
